Basic information
Horticulture of Guizhou University, founded in 1942, was approved to establish undergraduate major in 1962. In 2018, it was approved as a master’s degree authorization point of first-level discipline, which consists of four second-level disciplines: Pomology, Olericulture, Ornamental Horticulture and Tea Science. It is an important discipline supporting the development of Guizhou’s characteristic horticulture industry. At present, there are 30 full-time teachers, including 12 professors, 11 associate professors and 26 people with doctoral degrees; there are 2 doctoral supervisors and 24 master supervisors; 1 expert enjoying special allowance of the State Council, 2 outstanding provincial experts, 3 provincial outstanding young scientific and technological talents, 2 provincial 100-level talents, 3 provincial 1000-level talents, and 2 scientific and technological innovation talent teams in Guizhou. The discipline has 7 scientific research platforms, including the National Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau Characteristic Crop Germplasm Resource Nursery, the Rosa roxbunghii Engineering Technology Research Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Guizhou Fruit Tree Engineering Research Center, Guizhou Protected Vegetable Engineering Research Center, Guizhou University Vegetable Research Institute, Edible Fungi Research Institut, and Pepper Research Institute. It has a professional laboratory of more than 8,000 square meters and advanced scientific research equipment worth more than 50 million yuan.
The discipline makes full use of the geographical climate and resource advantages of Guizhou, with the goal of building a theoretical and technical system of horticultural plant germplasm innovation and breeding, cultivation and physiological ecology, biotechnology and other aspects in the karst ecological environment, cultivating outstanding talents for the all-round development of moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetic labor, and providing scientific and technological support and talent guarantee for the development of the horticultural industry inside and outside the province.
Research Direction
Pedology: The college obtained the right to award a master's degree in Pedology in 1995. The main research content or direction of the discipline is development and utilization of soil resources, improvement and directional cultivation of soil fertility, soil pollution and prevention and control; in the past five years, 97 master's students have been guided; This discipline has won 4 provincial and ministerial awards in the past 5 years, and students and teachers have published more than 130 core articles (including more than 40 SCI three districts and above, 9 SCI, and 31 authoritative journals), undertaken 25 topics at or above the provincial and ministerial level (including 10 national-level topics), authorized 2 invention patents, 12 utility model patents, and so on. At present, there are 4 professors among the master's tutors, including 2 second-level professors, 1 professor, 9 associate professors, 1 outstanding provincial expert, and 2 directors of the Soil Science Society of China.
In recent years, the pedology discipline has grasped the historical opportunities of big data, big poverty alleviation and big ecology in Guizhou, and has taken it as its mission to solve the problems and technical problems faced by Guizhou's soil resources in the development and utilization. All teachers and students give full play to the advantages of their disciplines, serve the local area, and participate in the third national soil census, the “Spring Breeze Action” to Combat Poverty, and the “10,000 Agricultural Experts to Serve the ‘Agriculture, Rural Areas and Farmers’ Action”. Guizhou Zunyi Pepper Science and Technology Garden of China Rural Special Technology Association has established cooperation and service relations with a number of units or enterprises to provide theoretical and technical support for the rational development and utilization of soil and resources in karst areas, the construction of high-quality agricultural product production bases, and the safe utilization of soil. Its academic influence at home and abroad is increasing day by day.
Pomology: It makes full use of Guizhou's geographical climate and resource advantages, takes the characteristic fruits of the karst mountains of Guizhou as the main research object as the test material, integrates traditional methods with modern biotechnology, genetic engineering and other methods, and conducts research on the characteristic fruits of the karst mountains, rosa roxbunghii, citrus, walnuts, plums, grapes, kiwi, etc., providing theoretical support and technical guarantee for the development of Guizhou's fruit tree industry. Four stable research directions have been formed: fruit tree physiological ecology and cultivation, fruit tree germplasm resource evaluation and utilization, fruit tree genetic breeding and biotechnology, fruit postharvest physiology and storage and preservation. At present, there are 13 teachers, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors and 6 lecturers. Among them, there are 2 outstanding provincial experts, 1 expert enjoying the special allowance of the State Council, 1 winner of Guizhou Youth Science and Technology Award; 2 training objects of excellent young science and technology talents in Guizhou, 2 hundred-level talents and 1 thousand-level talent in Guizhou; 2 doctoral supervisors and 11 master supervisors; 13 personnel with doctor’s degree and 2 persons with overseas study experience.
Ornamental Horticulture: This discipline makes full use of Guizhou’s geographical climate and resource advantages, takes Guizhou’s abundant herbaceous, liana and woody ornamental plant resources as test materials, integrates traditional means and modern biotechnology methods, and conducts research on the characteristic ornamental plants in the region, such as canna, azalea, plum blossom, orchid, lycoris radiata, lily, ornamental pepper and camellia, providing theoretical support and technical guarantee for the industrial development of Guizhou. Three stable research directions have been formed: biotechnology and genetic breeding of ornamental plants, cultivation physiology and ecology of ornamental plants, and germplasm resources innovation and utilization of ornamental plants. At present, there are 8 teachers. Among them, 2 are senior, 4 are associate senior, 2 are intermediate; 5 are doctors, 2 are masters and 1 is bachelor; and 3 have overseas study experience.
