Enrollment for a master's degree in crop science began in 1985, and in 2005, the college obtained the right to grant a master's degree in a first-level subject in crop science; in 2018, the college was authorized to obtain a doctorate degree in a first-level subject in crop science, and in 2019, the college began to enroll doctoral students in a first-level subject in crop science.
At present, there is 1 leading talent of “National Special Support Plan for High-level Talents”, 1 leading talent of young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation of Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 member of discipline evaluation committee of the State Council, 3 outstanding provincial experts, 2 talents of 100-level in Guizhou Province, 1 talent of 1000 innovation and entrepreneurship in Guizhou Province, 3 outstanding young scientific and technological talents of Guizhou Province, 29 professors, 13 doctoral supervisors and 40 master supervisors, of which 35 have doctor’s degrees.

In the past five years, it has won 8 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 2 teaching achievement awards, and 23 Chinese invention patents. It has won 256 national and provincial projects such as the project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, including 201 vertical projects above provincial and ministerial level, with vertical funds of 126 million yuan and horizontal funds of 36 million yuan, totaling 162 million yuan. 312 academic papers have been published, including 161 SCI papers.
This degree program has more research cooperation with Zhejiang University, China Agricultural University, Huazhong Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Northwest A&F University, Sichuan Agricultural University, Hunan Agricultural University, Yangzhou University, Southwest University, Hainan University, Guangxi University, Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, University of Haifa, Bay Food Tech of the United States and INRA of France and other institutions in related disciplines.
Research direction
This degree program has always been guided by the major strategic needs of national food security and regional economic and social development, and has carried out research on the characteristics of crop production in the karst mountains of southwest China, forming three research directions: crop genetics and breeding, crop cultivation and tillage, and seed science and technology.
①Crop Cultivation and Tillage
In view of the characteristics of agricultural production in karst mountainous areas, it focuses on the core goals of “high yield, high quality, high efficiency, ecology and safety” of mountain crops to carry out crop cultivation physiology and ecology, nutritional physiology and efficient fertilization, adversity physiology and regulation, efficient farming system, precise quantitative cultivation research and characteristic efficient cultivation technology system research and development and application. It has distinctive regional characteristics and advantages in the efficient utilization of mountain resources, the light and precise cultivation of rice, the resistant and high-yield cultivation of corn, the quality regulation of genuine Chinese medicinal materials, the research and standardized cultivation of secondary metabolism, and the efficient production of tobacco leaves in mountain ecology.
②Crop genetics and breeding
Focusing on the ecological characteristics of karst mountains, it explores new principles and methods of crop breeding, highlights the combination of traditional breeding means and modern biotechnology, focuses on high-yield, high-quality, resistance and disease-resistant breeding, studies the genetics and formation mechanisms of the main economic traits and resistance of crops, carries out the excavation, preservation and innovative utilization of specific germplasm resources, and conducts in-depth molecular identification, functional positioning and cloning of crop-specific genes. It has distinct regional characteristics and advantages in the aspects of rice high-quality resistance breeding, corn hybrid advantage theory and ecological breeding, wheat distant germplasm resource innovation and disease resistance breeding and tobacco germplasm resource innovation and hybrid advantage utilization.
③ Seed Science and Technology
It studies the regulatory mechanism of seed formation, development, maturation, and dormancy characteristics of crops in karst mountain areas, clarifies the physiological and biochemical characteristics and genetic mechanism of seeds under mountain ecological conditions, and explores new ways of seed quality regulation; uses modern biotechnology to dig and innovate excellent germplasm, studies the mechanism of seed resistance to germination and adversity, selects high-yielding, high-quality, widely adaptable and resistant excellent varieties, and conducts research on new technologies and methods such as seed production, coating, initiation, storage, and inspection. It has certain regional characteristics and advantages in the aspects of evaluation and utilization of mountain germplasm resources, high-yield seed quality-keeping regulation technology and seed industrialization development.
This degree program is closely related to the national economic construction and local agricultural production practice to carry out teaching and scientific research. It gives full play to the outstanding advantages of the Master's program in the research of main grain and oil crops (rice, corn, wheat and rape), Chinese medicinal materials, tobacco breeding, cultivation and technology, and make contributions to the local economic development.
