Historical evolution

The College of Agriculture, Guizhou University has a long history of running schools, which was rooted in the National Guizhou College of Agriculture and Industry founded in 1941. In 1950, the College of Agriculture of Guizhou University was established with departments of Agronomy, Agricultural Chemistry, and Plant Pests and Diseases. In 1954, Guizhou Agricultural College was established with a department of Agronomy. In 1997, Guizhou University and Guizhou Agricultural College merged to form the College of Agriculture,Guizhou University with departments of Agronomy, Plant Protection, Horticulture, and Environmental Science. After several discipline adjustment and reorganizations, the College of Agriculture, Guizhou University was established in August 2004. The college insists on taking Party construction as the leader, talent training and quality improvement as the foundation, discipline construction as the center, talent team construction as the key, scientific research as the driving force, serving agriculture, rural areas and farmers as its mission and management system innovation as the guarantee. It has condensed the college motto of "upholding virtue and academic pursuit, building prosperity through agriculture" and the spirit of developing crops and educating people, researching academic, contributing to the people and pursuing excellence. At present, based on the construction of high-quality new agricultural sciences, the overall strength of the college has gradually strengthened, and the comprehensive strength has been significantly improved. It is constantly working towards the goal of creating “first-class teaching, advanced scientific research, excellent talents, and scientific management”.


Faculties

The college now has 173 staff members, including 140 full-time teachers, 5 national-level leading talents, 60 professors, 57 associate professors and 130 people with doctoral degrees, and the teachers with doctor degrees account for 92.85% of the full-time teachers. In addition, the college has 34 doctoral supervisors and 129 master supervisors. At present, there is 1 national university-level Huang Danian-style teacher team, 1 national teaching team, 3 experts enjoying the special allowance of the State Council, 2 experts enjoying the special allowance of the provincial government, 2 key experts of Guizhou Province, 11 outstanding provincial experts, 14 provincial outstanding young scientific and technological talents, and 2 winners of the “Golden Teacher” Award of ordinary undergraduate universities in the province.

At present, there are 2,154 full-time students, including 1,309 undergraduate students, 762 master students, 83 doctoral students and 7 international students. The further education rate of undergraduate students has reached more than 55% for 4 consecutive years, reaching 61.74% in 2023; the rate of passing CET-4 has reached 59.3% and that of CET-6 has reached 14.3%; the employment rate of graduates has reached more than 95%; in the competitions in the ranking list of various national general university discipline competitions, the number of students participating in the competitions and the number of awards have increased year by year. There are a total of 356 entries in 2023, of which 73 have won provincial awards and 15 have won national awards. The college's ability to “promote students' innovative practice through discipline competitions” has been comprehensively improved. The college has opened a plant protection “DBN” innovation class to cultivate top-notch innovative talents with an international perspective; in 2022, under the leadership of President Song Bao'an, the college won the second prize of the Ministry of Education for teaching achievements; the output of postgraduate scientific research has increased year by year. In 2023, a total of 143 SCI-included papers in the college were published by the first author, including 101 papers in the second district and above, 21 papers in the first district, and 2 papers with an impact factor greater than 10 points.

 

Academic research

The discipline system is complete. At present, there are 11 provincial key laboratories and engineering technology centers, 8 provincial talent bases, 8 provincial and ministerial innovation talent teams, 23 off-campus practice teaching bases, and 5 new characteristic industrial scientific research platforms, including Dendrobium Research Institute, Edible Fungi Research Institute, Vegetable Research Institute, Rice Industrial Technology Research Institute and Alcohol Raw Material Industry Development Research Institute. There are 2 postdoctoral mobile stations, 2 doctor's programs in first-level disciplines, 6 doctor's programs in second-level disciplines, 4 master's programs in first-level disciplines, 10 master's programs in second-level disciplines, and 2 master's programs in agriculture.

There are four departments: Department of Agronomy, Department of Horticulture, Department of Plant Protection, Department of Agricultural Resources and Environment, and four undergraduate majors of Agronomy, Horticulture, Agricultural Resources and Environment and Plant Protection. Among them, Plant Protection, Agronomy and Horticulture are national first-class undergraduate majors, and Agricultural Resources and Environment are provincial first-class undergraduate majors.

From 2019 to 2023, the college undertook a total of 858 scientific research projects with a total contract amount of 280 million yuan, including 2 national key research and development programs, 106 national natural science funds programs; won 1 first prize of provincial science and technology progress, 5 second prizes, and 5 third prizes; published 2,026 papers, including 916 SCI, 437 authoritative journals, and 435 core journals; edited and participated in the compilation and publication of 45 academic monographs; cultivated 13 new varieties; authorized 68 invention patents and 113 utility model patents.

 

Serve the society

Combining the discipline characteristics and talent advantages, the college focuses on national food security and Guizhou agricultural characteristic industries, connects the rural industry chain with talent chain, knowledge chain and innovation chain, integrates the three sets of combined boxing mode of science and technology, education, combination of school and agriculture, and deeply serves the rural revitalization and agriculture, rural areas and farmers work of the province. Carry out the service of “12 agricultural industry teams”, focus on creating the “ten hundred thousand” action, integrating the college's 7 characteristic and advantageous industrial technical service teams (rice, characteristic grains and oils, vegetables, etc.), 13 expert gardens (walnut, bee sugar plum, chili, etc.) and 12 science and technology gardens (Jiang Passion fruit, Dushan bee sugar plum, Huishui bee sugar plum, etc.) with the 10 rural revitalization demonstration sites served; deeply participate in the third soil census of Guizhou Province, providing technical support, talent support, reference models and quality assurance for the province's “third soil census” work; select excellent young doctors to serve the local area as the first secretary of the village, local posts, and science and technology commissioners; organize teachers to participate in school-enterprise cooperation, carry out scientific and technological training and consultation; organize students to help agricultural-related enterprises, cooperatives and farmers solve technical problems in many ways through summer practice and participation in doctoral village leaders. With an average annual training of more than 20,000 people, it has provided strong scientific and technological support and talent guarantee for Guizhou's “new industrialization, new urbanization, agricultural modernization and tourism industrialization” construction, “strengthening the provincial capital” action and rural revitalization.
